MAGIC TENNER IN NORTH YORKSHIRE

THE TOTALLY LOCALLY MAGIC TENNER COMES TO NORTH YORKSHIRE

Four North Yorkshire towns join forces for first-ever county-wide Magic Tenner campaign

From 4–19 October, four North Yorkshire towns – Tadcaster, Malton & Norton, Pickering and Knaresborough – will take part in the first exclusively North Yorkshire Totally Locally Magic Tenner campaign.

The initiative is Supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority via the Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund.

The Magic Tenner campaign is based on a simple idea: if every adult spent just £10 in independent shops each week, instead of online or with national chains, it would deliver a huge boost to the local economy.

Research from The New Economics Foundation found that for every £10 spent with an independent business, up to £50 goes back into the local area by the money circulating round and round local businesses, local suppliers and community spend.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Over two weeks, businesses across the four towns will create fantastic special £10 offers – everything from gift bundles and meal deals to unique local experiences. The campaign aims to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore their high streets, discover new favourites, and back the small businesses that give each town its unique character.

Each business also promotes offers from other shops and businesses, collaborating to make their towns and high street busier.

Shops and businesses also display a poster showing how many local suppliers they themselves use, highlighting that spending that £10 with them creates a knock on effect into the local economy.

Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, said:

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. As the owner of an independent high street shop, I understand the importance of our vibrant towns, cities and villages as hubs for community activity. They offer a sense of local pride and play a vital role in providing a sense of belonging and identity.”

The four towns involved (MALTON & NORTON, PICKERING, KNARESBOROUGH AND TADCASTER) have each built strong reputations for independent retail and hospitality, and the Magic Tenner giving them a united platform to highlight this.

Chris Sands, founder of Totally Locally, said:
“The Magic Tenner is about more than bargains – it’s about showing the value of local shops, the variety they bring, and the way they reinvest in their communities. North Yorkshire’s towns are brilliant examples of this, and it’s exciting to see them working together.

Andrew Bundy of The Book Tree in Pickering said “We are really excited to be part of the Magic Tenner campaign, and we are thrilled to see the amount of businesses getting involved, and the superb offers they are bringing to the event”.

Residents are encouraged to look out for the Magic Tenner posters and displays in shop windows between 4th–19th October, and on social media and to discover some real bargains and offers, and to see just how far a tenner can go when spent locally.

The Totally Locally HQ team spent a day in Knaresborough following the trail of one £10 note to create this Knaresborough Magic Tenner video! Even the music is supplied by a local band.

The North Yorkshire Magic Tenner follows on from 4 Nationwide Magic Tenner campaign, which saw over 70 towns across the UK take part in each, with thousands of special £10 offers across high streets.
